PhD Project: Evolution following whole genome duplication - a comparative investigation of plant and animal genomes.
Supervised by: Prof. Dan Macqueen and Dr. Alex Twyford (School of Biological Sciences).
project title
postgraduate research
I am a PhD student in the Macqueen group. My project focuses on comparing evolutionary outcomes of whole genome duplication across the tree of life. I will investigate the rediploidisation process in diatoms, plants, and animals.
Biography & Previous Work
I have an undergraduate degree in Biology and Biochemistry from the University of Maryland and an MSc from the University of Edinburgh. For my MSc I studied introgression and speciation in a group of Scottish montane willows, developing my skills in population genetics and bioinformatics. I then worked for Forest Research, focusing on quantitative genetics. Next, I transitioned to working on plant-microbe symbioses at Washington State University, returning to bioinformatics and statistics.
outside of work
I enjoy hiking, spending most of my time bird watching or looking at wildflowers and other plants.
